Recording and Listening Blog

May 27, 2014

Each day I am on the lookout for moments of beauty, amazement, joy, and appreciation. These moments don’t have to be “big” or “extraordinary”— the “ordinary” moments are actually the most extraordinary when I am here for them: feeling the warm water on my hands as I wash them, noticing how the sunlight streams through the slits in a fence, or tasting the sweet juiciness of an apple.

Each day I record my experience with one of these moments. This commitment — besides being a joy to carry out — supports my practice in several ways: Recording the moment highlights it: yes, I am here now. It inspires me to look for more moments of beauty, amazement, joy, and appreciation that might otherwise pass unnoticed. Lastly, it is a celebration of the life that surrounds me in each moment.

Listening to the recordings, I am brought again to that place of presence. I am reminded that there is an alternative way to experience life than the one conditioned mind is offering.

  • Look for moments of beauty, amazement, joy, appreciation, peace, gratitude, and love — whatever lights you up — throughout your day for two weeks. Record and listen to your experience of at least one of these moments each day.
