Recording and Listening Blog

June 3, 2014

Egocentrickarmicconditioningselfhate will often set a standard and create rules around anything that boosts my spiritual practice. It is the surest way to get me off track.

If Recording and Listening has to look a certain way—be done in total quiet or in special ways or in ‘right’ places, for example—it limits my chance of actually doing it. Of course Life wants me to Record and Listen, and my life as it is now is perfect for it. Because wearing headphones is socially acceptable, I R/L when I’m shopping, riding the bus, at the gym, or in the car. R/L can happen almost any time, and I also try to practice getting creative about when I do it.

One of my favorite practices is to R/L first thing in the morning. I keep everything I need right by the bed and listen right away when I wake up. Once I’m out of bed, I’ll record some insights that the universe has worked out while I was asleep. All of this is much nicer than listening to the voices beat me up for not wanting to get out of bed or some other fool story. Very often I find that R/L replaces the conditioned conversation.

In that way, I get to see that a recording could replace conditioning at any point in the day. The more I can do that, the more I find times to be in R/L and not with the voices, the more exciting and joyful things get.

  • Get creative with a new time or place to R/L. If you never Record and Listen in the morning, try that for a few days. If you don’t R/L while walking, riding the bus, or at the gym, commit to trying out those times/places. Let life drop in an idea of a new time/place to R/L. Don’t let conditioning convince you that there is a right way! See for yourself what is possible.
