Recording and Listening Blog

August 1, 2014

On Friday, June 13, 2014, when the moon was full and Mercury was in retrograde, I read the Monastery Newsletter, which included the Guide's post about “23 hours and 50 minutes of Practice.”

Life suggested I take this practice on immediately.

I recorded with the Mentor right after reading the newsletter to find out how 23.50 could be a practice. The Mentor suggested setting a timer every 15 minutes to record and that I continuously listen to recordings.

As I was listening while driving my son to school, I noticed that listening on my non-dominant side had a much different effect. I noticed I was receiving the messages with more love, peace, and clarity than when I listened on my dominant side. The reason I was listening on my left side was so I could still listen to my son with my right ear.  Egocentric karmic conditioning/self-hate would have me believe that I can't listen to recordings while interacting with people. But, I tried it and the experience was profound.

I would rather be listening to the recordings on my recorder than the recordings of conditioned mind while interacting with people.  23.50 practice is exposing beliefs and assumptions as well as new, radical ways to practice ending suffering. Gassho.

  • Practice experimenting with listening to your recordings while you are interacting with people. Try keeping the ear buds in first your left ear, then your right. Do you notice anything?
